The connector, being positioned just along the edge of the first DIMM slot, doesn’t get in the way of much and it is a better location than we’ve seen others place it; however, ABIT’s “along the edge” positioning would be even more desirable. This cut the boot time by about 30 seconds, but the boot time still remained in the 2 minute range. Overclocking the A7V is easy due to the jumper-less design, and the board is quite stable at overclocked speeds. Asuus is plenty of room to the left and right of the socket, but the catches for the heat sink are above and below the socket, where components get in the way.

This can be helpful when overclocking the AGP slot, for example. The thought of an upgradeable VRM module had come to mind upon a7g seeing the A7V, especially with the power needs of the higher clocked Socket-A processors rising dramatically.
We have yet to see ASUS do something that didn’t have a very good reason behind it, so we’re going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that their engineers know what they’re doing. This alarm can be disabled in the BIOS, av the warning alarm should have been pre-set above 3.
The layout of the board is acceptable, but as with most Socket-A motherboards, the placement of components near the catches for the heat sink clips makes attachment of the heat sink a risky endeavor.
It’s an arrangement we think needs reworking. On our first trip to Taipei, Taiwan for this year’s Computexwe were amazed at the respect ASUS was given, even by competing motherboard manufacturers.

However, fast shutdown times on new systems can actually be a problem. One slip with a pliers while trying to hook the spring clip on the catch, and you could gouge the motherboard surface. Overclockers want an easy assus quick method of clearing the CMOS, if necessary, and don’t want to hunt around for a bent piece of metal I used tweezers. The board has the 5 PCI plus 1 audio modem riser configuration of peripheral slots, rather than the preferred 6 PCI slot layout.
But Asus added the ability to change the multiplier right on the motherboard.
The lack of a convenient way of clearing the CMOS can be frustrating if you are overclocking the zsus. There are a few design goof-ups in my opinion, but overall, the A7V is a good socket-A motherboard.
While it is difficult to say exactly why ASUS chose to mount these components vertically, there are a number of possibilities that could hold true. Just to be sure it wasn’t a bad board, I tried a second A7V board, which exhibited the same slow boot behavior. As we continue the comparison to the KT7-RAID, the heatsink on the VIA North Bridge isn’t actively cooled like that on the ABIT board, which is fine, since we saw no need for it, at the same time, there is no thermal compound placed between the North Bridge and the heatsink itself to aid in transferring heat.
The reason it is so bad, is that there is no jumper! Having components in the way makes getting to the clips difficult. And while the A7V has 4 built-in fan connectors, none of them is located near the bottom of the board for the front case fan. It also sports an AGP-Pro slot.

We haven’t seen an immediate need for including thermal compound in this location and it doesn’t affect stability as far as we know, so we didn’t count against ASUS for asud including it. The long boot time can be frustrating while setting up a system, where frequent reboots are necessary. I used the Detonator-2 5.

The only problem is, they did not put the options in the BIOS setup. The A7V is a well made board with an unusual addition not found on many motherboards. An instant winner in our eyes, the CUSL2 took the same chipset that every other motherboard manufacturer was equipped with, and managed to produce a motherboard that was more impressive than any other design based on that chipset.
